10-06-2010 The Young Apprentice Project Final Add Comments (0)

On March 24th the Learning Zone invited back five young apprentices from each of the 7 participating schools to make their final pitches to our esteemed panel of judges.

Joining us on the day to judge the efforts of our young apprentices were Jamie McGachy, centre manager, Mark Champkins, inventor of Concentrate products, David Waxley, from Brent council, Brian Hughes, Literacy Coordinator for Newham council and a member of the PR team from Concentrate. All of the young apprentices made fantastic pitches and the judges were blown away with their magnificent posters, television adverts, radio jingles and professionalism.

The decision as to who should be crowned winners of the Young Apprentice Project was tough and the judges took an unprecedented amount of time to reach their conclusion. Finally, the judges returned from deliberating and declared the apprentices from Kier Hardie Primary School as the winners.

Mark commented that he was particularly impressed with, “…the way the children continually did their research throughout their marketing of the product and asked outside individuals [Heart 106.2] for their opinions on what they were doing”.

Concentrate were so impressed with the quality of the work the young apprentices had mad that they are now going to feature a different schools work on their website over the coming weeks.

All the schools that took part should be incredibly pleased with the work and progress their pupils have made during their time with us. Check out the TV adverts for yourself at: http://www.concentrate.org.uk/index.php?page=162

02-02-2010 The Young Apprentice Project. Add Comments (0)
This month the West Ham United Learning Zone launched its Young Apprentice Project. This project targets boys in the borough’s primary schools and challenges them to be advertising executives, promoting a product from the clever people at Concentrate© through the mediums of television, radio and print.

Today saw us introduce the concepts of logos and slogans to our aspiring apprentices. The boys from Carpenters showed a fantastic knowledge of the logos and slogans for a whole host of companies, from fast food retailers to car manufacturers. Top of the class in our “Learning Zone Logo Quiz” were the teachers of Carpenters Primary School who proved a competitive bunch and wowed us all with their unrivalled knowledge of advertising slogans.

The coming weeks will see us evaluate a host of radio and television adverts identifying what makes them catchy and memorable as well as what makes some just plain boring and downright forgettable. It is clear to see that thus far the boys are having an enjoyable time focusing on promoting their products and turning them into the next ‘playground must have’. Our junior apprentices showed great skill and I am very much looking forward to the following sessions.

At the end of the project our apprentices will pitch their ideas to a select group of individuals who will form our panel of ‘experts’. Mark Champkins, inventor and creator of Concentrate© products, found fame and fortune on the BBC’s Dragon’s Den and will feature on our judging panel.

11-01-2010 A New Year & A New Term - Hello 2010! Add Comments (0)

With Newham schools returning last week after the Christmas break there was unexpected disruption and school closures thanks to a number of days of snowy weather. Fortunately, with a welcome thaw arriving this weekend and with the second week of term now upon us, we are very pleased to welcome another 4 Primary schools who will be participating in our Playing for Success project at the West Ham United Learning Zone this term.

Mondays – Carpenters Primary School

Tuesday – Gallions Primary School

Wednesday – St Edwards

Thursday – Gainsborough Primary School.

All 4 schools will be sending 15 pupils after school for the next 6 weeks. Schools will be specifically targeting those pupils deemed by the school as underachieving, pupils working at Level 3 who, with some additional support could be capable of achieving Level 4, pupils for whom English is an additional, and relatively new language, pupils lacking in confidence, motivation or self-esteem and those that are gifted and talented and need the extra support to push themselves further.

The focus of the programme will be to improve standards in literacy, numeracy and ICT and to build key skills. The pupils will work towards individual targets which make the programme suitable for all abilities. The activities are structured around a football and sporting theme which is designed to increase the pupils’ motivation to learn.

15-12-2009 Launch of our Boys Achievement Project for 2010 Add Comments (0)
Today we welcomed teachers from 7 Newham primary Schools who we will be engaging with when our Boys Achievement project begins in January. We gave them a taster of what to expect from the project with the teachers working together to produce a podcast and a short radio commercial. They also met pupils from Shaftesbury primary school who we worked with during the pilot of the project who shared their experiences.
This project has a varied range of aims and objectives which are outlined below. The need for the project stems from the observations conducted by Newham Leadership Team members and from issues raised during the OFSTED inspection.
The project is a three way partnership between various Newham schools, West Ham United Learning Zone and The Newham Primary Strategy Team. The project will take place at each school and then at the West Ham United Learning Zone. Lead by staff members from the centre as well as Brian Hughes from the Strategy Team.
The Project aims to:
 ·         Raise the level of boy’s engagement in Literacy.
·         Provide opportunities to develop Social Emotional Literacy Skills.
·         Provide specific audiences for the boys to write for.
·         Develop positive role models for playground behavior.
·         Raise the expectations on boys writing.

·         Raise the expectations on boy’s behavior.

In addition to this the benefits of staff training for all three partners and shared good practise across the three centres.

The project is a multimedia campaign to develop, promote and implement rules and structure to Playground use at schools. In an Apprentice style the boys will work in 3 teams of 5, the boys will develop Posters, TV adverts and Radio Adverts for their campaigns. The three teams will have access to a range of software programs and equipment such as video recorders and digital media devices.
Each school will spend 4 sessions at West Ham United Learning Zone and using the Apple Macs will produce TV adverts and posters for their campaign. At the end of the project using the Press Conference Room at Upton Park the Three teams will present and winners will be judged. The winning campaign will then be implemented at each Primary School.
Prizes from West Ham United will be given to all those that participate in the project with the winning team visiting the training ground in Chadwell Heath to meet some of the playing staff at the club.
