Welcome to West Ham United Learning Zone

2009-12-15 Launch of our Boys Achievement Project for 2010
Today we welcomed teachers from 7 Newham primary Schools who we will be engaging with when our Boys Achievement project begins in January. We gave them a taster of what to expect from the project with the teachers working together to produce a podcast and a short radio commercial. They also met pupils from Shaftesbury primary school who we worked with during the pilot of the project who shared their experiences.
This project has a varied range of aims and objectives which are outlined below. The need for the project stems from the observations conducted by Newham Leadership Team members and from issues raised during the OFSTED inspection.
The project is a three way partnership between various Newham schools, West Ham United Learning Zone and The Newham Primary Strategy Team. The project will take place at each school and then at the West Ham United Learning Zone. Lead by staff members from the centre as well as Brian Hughes from the Strategy Team.
The Project aims to:
 ·         Raise the level of boy’s engagement in Literacy.
·         Provide opportunities to develop Social Emotional Literacy Skills.
·         Provide specific audiences for the boys to write for.
·         Develop positive role models for playground behavior.
·         Raise the expectations on boys writing.

·         Raise the expectations on boy’s behavior.

In addition to this the benefits of staff training for all three partners and shared good practise across the three centres.

The project is a multimedia campaign to develop, promote and implement rules and structure to Playground use at schools. In an Apprentice style the boys will work in 3 teams of 5, the boys will develop Posters, TV adverts and Radio Adverts for their campaigns. The three teams will have access to a range of software programs and equipment such as video recorders and digital media devices.
Each school will spend 4 sessions at West Ham United Learning Zone and using the Apple Macs will produce TV adverts and posters for their campaign. At the end of the project using the Press Conference Room at Upton Park the Three teams will present and winners will be judged. The winning campaign will then be implemented at each Primary School.
Prizes from West Ham United will be given to all those that participate in the project with the winning team visiting the training ground in Chadwell Heath to meet some of the playing staff at the club.
