With Newham schools returning last week after the Christmas break there was unexpected disruption and school closures thanks to a number of days of snowy weather. Fortunately, with a welcome thaw arriving this weekend and with the second week of term now upon us, we are very pleased to welcome another 4 Primary schools who will be participating in our Playing for Success project at the West Ham United Learning Zone this term.
Mondays – Carpenters Primary School
Tuesday – Gallions Primary School
Thursday – Gainsborough Primary School.
All 4 schools will be sending 15 pupils after school for the next 6 weeks. Schools will be specifically targeting those pupils deemed by the school as underachieving, pupils working at Level 3 who, with some additional support could be capable of achieving Level 4, pupils for whom English is an additional, and relatively new language, pupils lacking in confidence, motivation or self-esteem and those that are gifted and talented and need the extra support to push themselves further.
The focus of the programme will be to improve standards in literacy, numeracy and ICT and to build key skills. The pupils will work towards individual targets which make the programme suitable for all abilities. The activities are structured around a football and sporting theme which is designed to increase the pupils’ motivation to learn.
