Playing for Success
Schools that attend PfS Sessions at the West Ham United Learning Zone are selected from a list compiled by the Inspectorate and Advisory Service for Newham, of schools that are receiving additional support to help them raise their attainment levels. Primary schools are determined by the SAT’s results of Key Stage 2 pupils, particularly those with a noticeable difference in the achievement of boys compared to girls. Secondary schools are determined by the Key Stage 2 SAT’s results of the pupils starting in Year 7.
We specifically look to target those pupils deemed by the school as underachieving, pupils working at Level 3 who, with some additional support could be capable of achieving Level 4, pupils for whom English is an additional, and relatively new language, pupils lacking in confidence, motivation or self-esteem and those that are gifted and talented and need the extra support to push themselves further. Sessions run during term time from 3.30pm to 6.30pm for 15 pupils. Primary during the first half of the term and Secondary in the second half of the term.
The focus of the programme is to improve standards in literacy, numeracy and ICT and to build key skills. The pupils work towards individual targets which make the programme suitable for all abilities. The activities are structured around a football and sporting theme which is designed to increase the pupils’ motivation to learn.
Communicating for Success
CfS is an exciting and innovative partnership between BT and the Football Foundation using the power of football to tackle digital exclusion and improve communication skills in the UK. CfS builds on our PfS educational programme with a focus on ICT and with the extra benefit of multi-sports sessions run by the community department at West Ham United. These run throughout the year on Saturdays mornings benefiting over 360 local school children. Sessions adopt a collaborative team teaching approach with PfS Mentors / Graduates, Community Department Trainees, and BT Volunteers working alongside Qualified Teachers, and Coaches to deliver the course. PfS Mentors, Community Department Trainees, and BT Volunteers receive cross-training in each aspect of the programme.
Other Delivery
Over the last year we have made a significant commitment to delivering new educational programmes for local schools in the Centre and also as part of an outreach offer. These new programmes have been developed in consultation with our steering group and with the support of local schools and teachers.
Family Learning:
We have continued to offer successful Family Learning Sessions to schools and have formed a long term partnership with a school in Tower Hamlets to deliver sessions focusing on boys on Sunday mornings.
Graduates:
Throughout the year we offer special ‘Graduate’ courses to targeted pupils who have previously attended Playing for Success. These sessions help us to explore new learning resources and ideas. It also offers longer term benefits to pupils who benefit from the learning environment we offer.
WHULZ Student Council:
The Student Council has continued to evolve over the last 12 months and although still holding responsibility for celebration events their responsibility has increased further with council involvement in curriculum development and representation on the Learning Zone steering group.
New Programmes for 2009
‘Lets Talk Zola’
Run in partnership with ‘Vivere L’Italiano’, a leading Italian Language school in London, we have developed an Italian language outreach programme. The classes, supported by our mentors, help pupils in primary schools gain the skills needed to support language acquisition. The lessons are themed around football and West Ham United.
‘Who are ya?’
An outreach drama project with pupils looking at the history of West Ham United and the local community explored through drama culminating in a performance showcasing these themes.
‘Building Bubbles’
Continuing the work first developed as part of our heritage project in 2007 we now offer music sessions in schools looking at the songs and chants sung in football grounds. Pupils are given the opportunity to write and produce their own piece of music and perform these in school assembly.
‘Green Street to Bollywood'
Dance sessions in schools looking at dance from different cultures within our local community. Pupils then perform and film their own self devised dance piece at the end of the course.
National Year of Reading / Reading Connects Recognition:
As part of the National Year of Reading celebrations the Centre achieved Reading Connects school status. The Centre holds regular events including Premier League Reading Stars celebration events, author workshops and Storytelling workshops within PfS.
